Modern archery is not all that different than the original bows and arrows used almost five thousands years ago. No question that bowhunting equipment  has advanced with technology, but the basic concept of loading an arrow into a curve bow and shooting it has remained the same. Archery, by definition, is the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows and archery was invented for hunting purposes and warfare. Today we see archery as an Olympic event as a precision sport where expert archers display their various skills. Archery hunting is a popular pastime for big game hunters who would rather have a challenge of shooting a deer or elk with a bow and arrow than simply dropping the poor animal with a shotgun. I respect bow hunters and especially people who attempt bowfishing . Compound bows are the preferred choice for bow hunters but you will also see recurved bows being used. Longbows are used by hunters looking to recreate the tradional archery dynamics and require much more skill to hit a target than modern bows do. Crossbows are somewhat controversial and some states have outlawed their use for hunting purposes, although disable hunters are still allowed to use them. Competitive archery is also called Target Archery and has evolved enough over the centuries that the Olympics recognizes it as a sport.
